Commercial space, housing and office space are integrated into one building block

The consolidation and interchangeability of functions have become important focus points in architectural commissions. It means that the project focusses less on the literal transliteration of a function into an architectural programme but tends more to creating structures within which various functions can coexist.

Commissioned by Elimo nv, it was examined how offices, housing and shopscould be integrated in a solid construction unit between Louizalaan/avenue Louise and Wollendriestorenstraat/rue de la Grosse Tour. Although they offer interesting possibilities for living and working in city centres, the upper floors of commercial properties often remain empty. In this case, it was decided to demolish the existing offices on the Wollendriestorenstraat/rue de la Grosse Tour and the inner area to be able to provide a better mix of functions in a qualitative architectural framework. The new volumes on the Wollendriestorenstraat/rue de la Grosse Tour and the inner area saw the integration of living, shopping and office functions. The volume in the inner area is fitted with a green roof which, together with the construction of an open inner area, creates a pleasant green environment for both shop customers and local residents.
