Metrostation Anneessens, Brussels

Organisation of the unused areas in the Anneessens metro station

In 2006, Sum won the Brussels Mobility architectural competition for unused space in Brussels metro stations. Sum was ultimately retained to work on the Hallepoort/Porte de Hal and Anneessens metro stations.

In 1976, pre-metro station Anneessens was inaugurated. It is the last design by Maxime Brunfaut who had previously completed the Central Station. Next to the stop, a total of 1,200 square metres of underground exhibition and meeting space has been provided. Since the beginning, this space has been used for, among other things, the information centre on the construction of the tram line but has gradually been subdivided into several smaller spaces and storage rooms.

For the long underground space at the Anneessens station, Sum proposed interactive cultural spaces . This art lab should offer artists the opportunity to develop, create, try out and later exhibit or perform various art projects. It should afford starting artists the opportunity to test out their work before it actually sees daylight and is exhibited or performed in the well-known cultural spaces.

The organisation of the Brussels Biennial art event was thus an exciting challenge for making these unknown spaces public and for offering space to art. Sum therefore enthusiastically collaborated with them and in the short term developed the plans for rebuilding the unused areas in the Anneessens metro station. In the meantime, the vacant rooms offer a surprising spatiality that forms an exciting context for art installations and other cultural and recreational events.
