Reconversion and extension of a mansion on Waterloolaan, Brussels

Old commercial property is opened up and gets a new extension

The project encompasses the conversion of a commercial property on the ground floor and the first floor as well as an extension at the rear. A number of separation walls have been removed while the original structure remains. The basement was also cleared and made accessible from the central, half-round staircase.

Adjacent to the back wall, a new glass volume has been added as an extension to the shop area on the ground floor, pulled out to include level -1. In the back, a sunken patio is provided on the basement level to bring in light and to create a connection with the garden. The glass roof will be fitted with dynamic blinds and all required measures have been taken as regards fire prevention.

With a new elevator against the existing back wall accessibility to the floors above is optimised.

The construction at the rear of the site has not been altered. The remaining free space is laid out as a garden. The interior consists of spacious, bright shopping volumes, finished with a combination of natural stone, parquet, plasterwork and glass.
