Residential care centre Ceder aan de Leie, Harelbeke

Residential care centre is extended and adjusted to present-day needs

The Harelbeke OCMW owns two buildings for elder care along the Leie banks (Vrijdomkaai). The residential care centre Ceder aan de Leie offers room for 120 inhabitants and was built for the OCMW in 1993-1994 by Sum (then known as Groep Planning), just like the 47 neighbouring service flats. A garden was laid between the residential care centre and the service flats connecting the Harelbeke market place and the Leie.

The evolutions in the care sector and the changing comfort requirements gave rise to a new project that connects the residential care centre with the service flats and significantly increases the capacity. Vertical volumes are added to the existing building with new living areas and rooms. In addition, a bridge volume is being created between the residential care centre and the service flats. Also the now undefined front square has been redone. The bridge volume explicitly strives for a strong visual link with the market place and the river.
