Square Marie Janson in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles, Brussels

Design for the reconstruction of the Marie Janson square

test

EN NL FR

Sum and CityTools won the competition for reconstruction of the Marie Janson square in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles. Following the demolition of the Munthof in 1979, the square was only provisionally redeveloped in the 1980s. The reconstruction that is now proposed falls within the scope of the ‘Métal-Monnaies' district contract and aims at rebuilding a central public space that will breathe new life into this especially strategically and historically interesting and dense district.

The project also aims at managing the different streams of users and the connection with both the Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles forecourt and its daily market and the upper section of Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles. The reconstruction of the square is characterised by the green slopes that unite a variety of functions (leisure and business as well as access to the underground parking). Given the new lay-out of the square, a wide range of activities can now take place on the large terrace.
